SANDCASTLES

Surgical Love, with scalpel and suture
The sweet smelling sterility measured in precise cc's
Occasional analgesic for the pain, not enough to addict
Doctor, doctor, you'll be the Death of me.

Love, love, love, was that what you wanted
When you beat the love out of me like a drunk father?
Over and over, unrelenting, the wish for the courage
To come over and ask what was the matter.

How much more, how much more love till I tire?
Time made me bitter, oh you went and killed a child!
Over and over, unrelenting, senseless in my desire
Searching cool marble for calligraphic design.

Too drunk or stubborn to give up my foolish dance
I prayed upon coarse straw and velvet fine
Perhaps in the flash I could not see the holes in the wall
Maybe I was draining the sea one scallop at a time.

Is there a holy magic or is all magic Harut and Marut?
Perhaps the boy turning his back on the vast ocean
Found water he could hold and play with in peace
Perhaps Sisyphus is happy in searching for the Divine.

INKTOBER 4: SCALLOP/"SANDCASTLES"

MUSIC: Spaceman, The Killers
VIDEO: "Pulp Fiction", 1994, Tarantino

St Augustine is said to have been pondering God when he came across a boy pouring water from a scallop shell into the beach sand. He asked the boy what he was doing. The boy replied that he was trying to drain the ocean using the scallop shell. Upon this St Augustine realized how futile his pondering was - like the boy trying to drain an ocean, he could not comprehend God's mystery - the proverbial "cloud of unknowing". Which is solace given how much Fate plays practical jokes on me.
