FLIGHT

Pitter patter the raindrops scurry down the pitted asphalt
Rivulets down the gentle slope of a road well washed
Gurgling through the drain, yellow rambutans bobbing along
A misty aromatic blanket cast over the dewy green and black
Enshrouding the pasars and kampungs and homes of Johor.

Joyous in finding a firm stone beneath the foot
Weary from hijra across the kala pani
I made my salam to a land that no longer loved me
A bitter farewell, a traumatic divorce, a smiling stewardess
I nervously embraced homelessness.
